Gerhard Erasmus struck an unbeaten 156 from 125 balls to help Namibia level their five-match one-day international series against Ireland at one win apiece, beating the tourists by 31 runs in Windhoek.
Erasmus Shines With Bat and Ball
The Namibia captain twice took the game away from the visitors. First, his career-best innings helped his side post an imposing 321-6 in their 50 overs. He received strong support from Frylinck, who made 76 from 90 balls. Erasmus then took the final two wickets of the match as Ireland’s tail threatened to complete an unlikely chase. The 31-year-old’s efforts ensured his side took the win.
Ireland captain Paul Stirling won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat. His bowlers struggled, especially in the death overs. Without leading seamer Mark Adair, Byron McDonough took a wicket with the first ball of his spell but finished with 1-71. Curtis Campher also conceded heavily, returning 1-74 from his 10 overs.
Spinner Gavin Hoey was the standout bowler for Ireland. He matched his three wickets from Wednesday’s victory, this time claiming 3-53.
Ireland Fall Short in Pursuit
Chasing 322, Stirling continued his return to form with his second half-century of the series. He made 77 from 71 deliveries. His dismissal, leg before wicket to Jack Brassell, opened a collapse in which three batters fell for just six runs.
Brassell led the Namibia bowlers with 4-52, also dismissing Lorcan Tucker, George Dockrell and Campher. Ireland were eventually bowled out for 290 in 47.3 overs.
A ninth-wicket stand of 58 between Hoey and Jai Moondra briefly brought Ireland within sight of victory. However, Moondra was out for 20, caught and bowled by Erasmus, and the visitors’ hopes faded quickly.
Series Heads to Decider
The series resumes on Tuesday with the third match in Windhoek. Ireland will use the fixture as part of their preparations for next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
